By April 2006, the charity 'Mothers of Africa', formerly known as 'Mothers of Benin', had been formed. The change of name was in response to the increasing number of requests for help being received from other countries in Africa.
The charity took a small but significant step to meet our charitable objectives by conducting two educational seminars for predominantly anaesthetic nurses working in Benin & next-door Togo.
Following a small but probably predictable skirmish with French Police &Customs in Paris, the travelling group; Judith Hall, Paul Clyburn, Steve Morris & Sarah Harries all met up safely albeit a bit sweaty in Cotonou, Benin's capital, with temperatures over 40º and 80% humidity. They had planned 4 days teaching content.
Seminars were a mixture of in-theatre clinical training & classroom-based teaching, incorporating ALERT-based recognition of the sick mother, airway management plus general principles of anaesthesia for Caesarean section. Focusing teaching on these areas has proved successful and this type of teaching has since been used elsewhere by Mothers of Africaa. It should be noted however that the training needs of each group are assessed individually and in collaboration with the trainers in the country visited.
