Babies in Benin

The first trip to Contonou, Benin took place in May 2005.  It followed Professor Judith Hall’s initial meeting with Professor Martin Chobley from Benin and was a fact finding mission with Dr Paul Clyburn to establish how Cardiff anaesthetists could help.

Two hospitals were visited - the HOMEL in Cotonou and Abomey, a 3 hour drive outside Cotonou.  Both had busy maternity departments and evidenced their maternal mortality statistic of  475 per 100 000; this contrasts with UK figures of 12 per 100 000. Read more...

One of our teams in Togo, ready to start work!

By April 2006, the charity 'Mothers of Africa', formerly known as 'Mothers of Benin', had been formed.  The change of name was in response to the increasing number of requests for help being received from other countries in Africa. The charity took a small but significant step to meet our charitable objectives by conducting two educational seminars for predominantly anaesthetic nurses working in Benin & next-door Togo. Gogoe Augustine, nurse anaesthetist, Liberia winning prize

Since May 2008 Mothers of Africa has an ongoing programme of educational support visiting Phebe Hospital in Liberia.  There has been a school of anaesthesia there for many years, which Mr Fassah (nurse anaesthetist and head of the school) has done his best to maintain even during the 15 years of civil war.  Mothers of Africa provide additional training and some equipment to support the present school.
