Why education?  Knowledge empowers people to help themselves, that’s obvious.

The idea is to teach simple, safe skills, to whoever is delivering anaesthesia to pregnant mothers.  This could be either doctors, nurses or simply people trained up to give an anaesthetic – it doesn’t matter who it is, they just have to have safe practice explained to them.  Whoever!  It really is a pleasure to be involved in the education of these people, they are very keen to learn and being there feels like a honour.  Our teams report back from Benin, Togo, Liberia and Ethiopia, that simple cost neutral interventions can really help.

We also teach resuscitation, many of the women coming into hospital are close to death.  If the mother dies, then the chances of the baby surviving are very poor indeed.
